The Kennall Vale Nature Reserve is a very well-hidden valley between Redruth and Falmouth, Cornwall. It was the site of the Kennall Vale gunpowder factory which started production about 1812 and supplied the local Cornish mines, employing about 50 men by 1850. When more sophisticated explosives came onto the market in the 1880s, the factory declined before closing in the early 1900s.
In May 1838 "Five mills blew up in succession, and part of a roof was found a mile from the premises. The reports were most terrific and created the greatest alarm over an extensive tract of country". Amazingly only one man lost his life.
