Nestled on the rugged cliffs of Handa Island in Scotland, guillemots create a breathtaking spectacle.
These charming seabirds, with their sleek black and white plumage and pointed beaks, are a wonder to behold as they perch precariously on narrow ledges, their cries mingling with the crashing waves below.
Guillemots, or common murres, are expert divers, plunging up to 180 meters deep in pursuit of fish. Despite their clumsy appearance on land, they are acrobatic swimmers, using their wings to 'fly' underwater.
They lay their single pear-shaped egg directly on bare rock, a shape that prevents it from rolling off the cliff.
