The Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park, Lancaster, is often called the “Taj Mahal of the North”.
This stunning Edwardian folly was commissioned by industrialist Lord Ashton in memory of his late wife. Built in 1909, the structure boasts a copper dome visible for miles and intricate carvings that make it a marvel of craftsmanship.
Folklore suggests the memorial's location, high on a hill, was chosen to symbolise eternal love watching over the city. Surrounded by lush gardens, it’s a perfect spot for a stroll.
This horizontal view captures the Ashton Memorial head-on, revealing its full architectural splendour. The orange pathway invites you into the scene, with winter's bare trees and fallen leaves adding a nostalgic touch. The moody grey-blue sky makes the white stone pop, creating a striking contrast.
Whether as a print for your wall or a card to share, this image celebrates the beauty of Lancaster’s crown jewel.
